Post Insteon/X10 Ceiling Fan & Light Control-3 Wire Installation
I have ceiling fans in each room of my house. They all are 3 wire (+ ground) installations, meaning I can control the light and fan separately using two wall switches or a "duplex" wall switch (my current installation). Has anyone tried to use Insteon/X10/Indigo to control a ceiling fan and light?

I assume I could use a Switchlinc Relay for the fan and a Switchlinc Dimmer for the light, but that would require major drywall surgery at each electrical box. Would prefer a solution that allows me the ability to change fan speeds and dim the light. Any ideas?

Have you already considered replacing the existing switch with a keypad dimmer for the light, hiding an inline relay in the ceiling to control the fan, then linking one of the keypad buttons to the inline relay?

Agree with eme jota ce. You might even have room for the inlinelinc relay in the ceiling fan's case where it attaches to the ceiling.

I've yet to find a good solution for controlling fan speed.

I already have an 8 button KPL the triple gang box which includes my "duplex" ceiling fan/light control; the third bay houses a Russound ABus audio control. If I used the current space taken up by the duplex switch, would I be able to fit both an InlineLinc and an Inline Relay in the single space? (I would simply put in a blank cover over the Decora opening after wiring in the relay and dimmer.)

I'm using an x10 switch for fan control ( XPDI3 ) It does control the speed.

It can cause some hum, but that is a given for any motor 'speed controlled' unless its designed for it (ie: VFD motors) The reason the fan doesn't hum on the 3 settings is that the phasing of the motor (magnetic poles) are altered.

Thanks. Understand about the motor phasing with a "standard" 3 speed switch. Really want to avoid any significant humming as the fan in question is over my bed and only used at night. I'm planning on trying a few Insteon control methods but suspect I won't like the resultant hum. Probably end up going with an RF electronic controller and cap off the third wire.

With an Indigo 5 plug-in (or a fair amount of scripting in Indigo 4) I suspect that we'd be able to control a Z-Wave based Leviton fan speed controller/dimmer such as the Leviton VRF01-1LZ:
http://www.amazon.com/Leviton-VRF01-1LZ ... B001HT4M48

While I'd prefer to stay with Insteon, the lack of an Insteon dimmer that works with inductive loads (like fans), and my lack of interest in home-brewing a solution that bridges an Insteon incandescent dimmer to an inductive load, leads me think I'll be trying that Leviton VRF01-1LZ in the near future.

Perhaps the good folks at Insteon are listening, and if enough folks say they're going to use a Leviton Z-Wave fan controller, Insteon will get with the program and offer one of their own. We can hope!

With regard to thermostatic control of a ceiling fan: I've been using Oregon Scientific gear and WeatherSnoop. I have several Oregon Scientific sensors inside & outside my home, and I'll script things such that if I've turned the fan on in that room, Indigo will adjust the fan speed based on room temperature. To some degree I already do that now with the 3M Filtrete Wi-Fi thermostat; I can control the 3M Filtrete Wi-Fi thermost's mode and threshold settings via scripts in Indigo.

I have a hunch that Insteon is developing a ceiling fan module based on a "guess what this is" type image they posted on their Facebook page which contained a picture of a ceiling fan, and some electronics and wiring below it..

I posted on their Facebook page that I was ready to buy one when they went to market. Every little bit of encouragement helps!

I have confirmed with them that we should see it within this year, and it is an inline module that is a dimmer for the lights, and a relay for the fan.

My fans don't have lights, so all I really want is a variable speed (even just Off/Low/Med/High is good enough) fan. Do you know if it will have this feature? If so, I will wait for it.

I am not aware

Hi All

I noticed that smart home has a unit called Fanlinc (INSTEON Ceiling Fan and Light Controller, Fixture Module (Dual-Band)
that will control the fan's speed and light. Model : 2475F.. I don't know if this helps or not
